Cold Outside, Warmth Inside with Weekly Flower Delivery in NYC

For many of us, as lunchtime approaches we make our way outside to eat in a nearby park or sitting area. The fresh air & beauty of nature is refreshing and helps us break up the redundancy of an 8 hour (or more) work day at a computer. As winter comes closer, the desire to sit outside in that setting doesn’t fade, but the reality of sitting in the wet, cold is not something many of us are willing to suffer through.

Rain, Rain Go Away! Outdoor Landscape Design Dreams for May

cialis in uk/05/nyc-outdoor-landscape-morningglory.jpg” alt=”nyc-outdoor-landscape-morningglory” width=”247″ height=”247″ />So…in February it was 70 degrees, in March it was 80 degrees, in April we wanted to plant all the summer flowers because it was so warm and sunny and perfect – until Earth Day, April 22 when we had torrential rain and cold disgusting weather, and sadly I feel that we haven’t really had 3 days of consistently gorgeous weather since. Too much dreary grayness puts me in a HORRIBLE PLACE. I hate my apartment. My laundry won’t dry. The store is damp and cold. All the outdoor landscapes and plants I see look verdantly green – but waterlogged and droopy – the spring flowers look like they are drowning. Enough with the cold and rain already! Let’s get spring and summer going again!

Georgeann’s Outdoor Landscape Design – IN PROGRESS

In an effort to squeeze the raindrops out of my mind, I want to update you on my own efforts to commit to a gorgeous garden in 2012. In March, I created a “to do” list of actions to enhance and improve my own small outdoor space. [Read more →]

Spring Ahead! Outdoor Landscaping Design Dreams for March

This has been a weird winter. When we should have been shivering in December, we were holiday shopping in flip flops and spring jackets instead. Nature finally ran its course – the leaves managed to fall off the trees, and the planters and wi

Pansies Help Welcome Springtime in February

One of my clients could not wait for spring flowers, so we took a chance and planted a vibrant rainbow of pansies in her front outdoor planter a few weeks ago to combat the lingering grayness of late winter.

There are certain standard go-to plants that florists and interior designers depend on for simple, clean lines, bold green foliage, and easy no-nonsense maintenance. Corn Plants, Dracaena Marginatas, Snake Plants, Pothos, and Janet Craigs are wonderful, low-maintenance indoor plants that are generous and patient with humans and tolerate the confinement of our stuffy corporate offices and studio apartments.

Sometimes, however, you need a little drama to make your life more exciting. I’ve come across four exciting plants in the past few days that I love, and that don’t always come to mind for New York florists. Try incorporating these green goddesses into your corporate offices and apartments for a little extra flair!

Every autumn, my husband notes that the fastest time of year is the time between Labor Day and Halloween. One day you are sitting in your shorts eating barbequed chicken, and the next school is starting, the nights grow colder, the heat goes on in the building, Christmas decorations go up next to the Halloween candy at the store, and you still haven’t taken your winter clothes down from storage!

To help slow down time and focus on the beautiful but fleeting autumn season, I thought I’d talk about our favorite blossom for fall floral arrangements: the chrysanthemum! [Read more →]

Urban Oasis: Plant Care Advice and Inspiration from a Friend

My friend Lisa is an amazingly creative and fun human being. As an actress, she spent the summer in the Finger Lakes singing and dancing as Sally Bowles in “Cabaret.” I know she is an accomplished painter, and also has been a professional muralist; s

he dresses cool and knows all about make-up; and she smiles 96% of the time. What I DIDN’T know is that Lisa has an almost supernaturally green thumb.

Last time I visited Lisa was something like 8 years ago, and my memory was of a sparse and open space. Imagine my pleasant surprise on a recent visit when I walked into a plant-filled urban gardening oasis in NYC! Beautifully displayed green, glossy plants did wonders to make the apartment feel cozy, cool and inviting. I got her to share some of her plant care advice with me:

Choose Gorgeous, Low-Maintenance Indoor Plants

Zamioculcas zamifoia: Lisa’s beautiful “ZZ plant” is a good choice, because these plants are good-looking, have a unique shape, and are very easy to maintain. Plant care is a cinch: they don’t require much water and are broad-spectrum plants that can tolerate direct sun or shade.

Over Watering: When You Love Your Indoor Office Plants Too Much

One aspect of my job is to visit offices around New York City and troubleshoot indoor office plant problems. I’ve noticed a singular phenomenon among many office-workers: an absolute obsession with the
