My friend Sharon is hosting a Halloween Costume Soiree on Saturday, and her invitation included the emphatic request: “PLEASE DON’T ALL COME AS ZOMBIES!!” Slimey, gooey, oozy, and brain-eating, zombie costumes are this year’s answer to 2010’s rash of True Blood-inspired vampire costumes. But no matter how hard you try, it is impossible to make a zombie pretty. Thus my latest quandary: “what should I be for Halloween?”
As usual, my brain turns to floral design concepts. This week I found an awesome site dedicated to making your own costumes: Coolest-Homemade-Costumes.com! This DIY costume site site even has an entire section devoted to flower costumes.
Some of these flower Halloween costumes designed for little kids are so adorable that we can’t wait to try them ourselves, like this one for a Flower Garden Costume. What you’ll need to embrace your own inner flower child:
Green sweatshirt and stretch pants
Artificial flowers
Yarn
Artificial (or real!) wreath
Face paint
You can easily find the items you need for this costume at any thrift store – the author only spent $13! Now that’s a bargain.
This fabulous and inspiring site gives detailed instructions on how to make many other flower costumes, as well as an estimated cost for materials. Check it out, and be a pretty, living flower for Halloween instead of a gross dead thing!
If you’d rather use lovely-smelling real flowers for this costume, we can always whip up some Halloween-friendly holiday flower arrangements for you! Give us a call at (212) 687-3434 or browse our selection of holiday-themed floral arrangements online.
Check out our lovely flower arrangements on the set of Anderson Cooper’s new daytime talk show, Anderson! Our floral designer Georgeanne created the flower decor using inspiration from Judy Collins’ 1967 album Wildflowers. We think they’re a perfect background setting for Judy Collins’ performance of “Amazing Grace” for Gloria Vanderbilt, if we do say so ourselves:
We love being a part of New York City events like this, and are happy to provide event flowers and floral decor for all occasions! Give us a call (212) 687-3434 for a consultation of your own.

Last week, Big Apple Florist got an amazing opportunity to decorate the NYC set of Anderson Cooper’s brand-new daytime talk show Anderson!
Our flowers can be seen next week in the Monday, September, 19 2011 episode. Anderson’s special guest on Monday will be his fabulous Mom, Gloria Vanderbilt, and will feature a musical performance by Judy Collins – Gloria’s favorite singer! The producers asked that we create a colorful display garden of folk-singing flowers, with our inspiration being Judy Collin’s “Wildflowers” Album.
Summer is OFFICIALLY here. I’ve been saving this post for the day when I could start with that. I realize you might be thinking – wait…is this about floral fashions and floral jewelry, or summer flower arrangements? – and to that I would reply “BOTH!” Imagine my excitement when I was walking down the streets of New York City early one morning with my breakfast (coffee), and I saw a Tiffany’s ad with some beautiful floral jewelry. New York, Tiffany’s, flowers, coffee… amazing.
Most people choose to send flowers using traditional NYC flower delivery, and then there are those few people who have arrangement or delivery requests that are a little bit…strange. Here, we’re sharing some of Big Apple Florist’s most memorable NYC flower delivery stories:
Did Someone Order a Banana?
One of the strangest NYC flower delivery experiences we’ve had was when a customer called up and asked if we would deliver flowers to his girlfriend while wearing a banana costume. We said we would be able to do so if we could find a store that could rent us one. After searching all over the city for a banana costume (which cost him an arm and a leg), we found one! Our delivery driver graciously put on the costume and delivered a beautiful dozen red roses vase arrangement to the customer’s girlfriend, who loved the flowers as well as the costume.
Flowers are so often used as inspiration in fashion, and it’s no surprise that floral fashions are a favorite topic of ours. So, whenever the weather is gray and gloomy, I know I like to keep things bright with some of my favorite floral pieces. There are endless options for any style, budget, or occasion. Here are a few examples of some great floral fashion pieces to add to your current wardrobe:
Here is a great tank top that can easily be dressed up with a blazer for work or dressed down and tucked in to some high waisted jeans.
Over the weekend, a few of us here at Big Apple Florist participated in the New York AIDS Walk. It was an amazing experience walking with the 45,000 people who were in attendance. It definitely was an inspiration to us to become more involved.
If you missed the boat, don’t fret! We will try to keep you updated on various projects and organizations you can be a part of, because, like you, we are proud to be New Yorkers and we love that our job is to beautify so many homes, businesses, and events in NYC with flower table arrangements, centerpieces, and plants!
There are so many projects that you can be a part of to help continue to green up NYC. This week the spotlight is on theMillion Trees NYC project!
