Our favorite flowers to celebrate the New Year are bright, brilliant white flowers. White New Year’s flowers symbolize a fresh new start filled with positive resolutions and a clear heart and mind, and a New Year’s centerpiece of fresh white flowers is sure to lend your New Year’s Eve party a positive, hopeful, and optimistic aura.

I have a few people in my life for which it is impossible to buy gifts. They are reformed so they don’t drink alcohol or smoke anymore, and a tower of chocolate covered cherries is simply out of the question. They only read books from the library. They have enough clothes to last them till eternity. They have enough knick-knacks and gadgets to fill a museum. They are curmudgeons, but I love them.
So, what do you give that person who doesn’t want anything? Why not a gorgeous arrangement of festive holiday flowers? Of course they will say, “You shouldn’t have!” and “Why’d you spend all that money when they are just going to die!” Let them.

Hanukkah, known as the “Festival of Light,” begins this week. Each night during Hanukkah, the menorah is lit to celebrate the re-dedication of the Great Temple of Jerusalem after the successful Maccabee Revolt, and the miracle that occurred when the priests lit the menorah for eight days with only a single day’s supply of oil. Hanukkah is a perfect opportunity to celebrate victory, tradition and faith.
Here at Big Apple Florist, we’ve been brainstorming to create fun, festive Hanukkah decorations to accent your celebration. Here are some tips for highlighting your table using Hanukkah flowers this holiday season: [Read more →]

Amaryllis Bouquets for Stunning Christmas Flower Centerpieces
According to the Victorian language of flowers, the amaryllis flower symbolizes Pride, Timidity, and Splendid Beauty. It peaks in holiday month of December, making it an excellent Christmas flower bouquet or addition to your Christmas flower centerpiece. (The amaryllis is also available in all the months with an “r”: September through April.)

Hercules amaryllis sparkle in our “Bright Nights” Christmas flower arrangement – my favorite this month!
Also known as the hippeastrum or “Knight’s Star” (“hippeas”= knight and “astron”=star), amaryllis flowers have hollow stems that can produce 3-5 glorious trumpet-shaped blossoms. [Read more →]

The race is on. Thanksgiving is over. The lights are up. The poinsettias are displayed. You braved the crowds of “Black Friday” at the mall….or did you?

Last week while wearing my flip-flops in the almost 70° weather, I was greeted by a Salvation Army bell-ringer rocking out to a recording of “Feliz Navidad” at the entrance to Grand Central. As I cut through the station to hop on the Times Square Shuttle, I glanced toward Vanderbilt Hall and noticed the kiosks of the Holiday Fair were in full swing. As I neared the Shuttle platform, I found the platform decorated like a candy cane with the train itself advertising the latest Christmas movie.

This weekend, I shared my husband’s Thanksgiving pumpkin pie recipe with ginger streusel crust. As you know, my husband’s idea of “abundance” is a bit exaggerated, and it’s not uncommon for us to have 15 desserts to gobble up on Thanksgiving Day!
To start Thanksgiving week off right, I’m sharing one more of my husband’s delicious Thanksgiving dessert recipes. This one will appeal to anyone with a love of chocolate, and it’s a Thanksgiving favorite of my mom’s and Aunt Joan’s!

I have a lot to be thankful for. I live in the greatest city in the world (New York!). I have a challenging and exciting job that engages my intellect and creativity. I have wonderful family and friends who fill my life with laughter. And I am blessed with a husband who is not only kind and handsome, but also a gifted cook with a passion for pie (recipe below). For me, Thanksgiving is the best day of the year!
A Wealth of Thanksgiving Pies
Years ago, my husband and I decided to bring the party to us and began hosting Thanksgiving dinner in our own apartment. In the first year, it was just me, my husband, my mom & dad, my aunt, and 2 last minute guests: my cousin Bob and his NYFD colleague (with their radios, in case they had to go deal with an emergency). My husband has a warped sense of abundance, so he created at least 5 giant desserts that year for all 7 of us, including a gloriously beautiful pecan pie and a spicy pear and quince crisp. He was a triumph! [Read more →]

Warm oranges, radiant yellows, velvety burgundies and rich browns – it’s a pleasure to design Thanksgiving flower arrangements with the delicious, luxurious palette of autumn. And Thanksgiving’s glorious grand season finale gives us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the beauty of fall!
The Perfect Setting: Thanksgiving Flower Arrangements
Create a sense of amazing abundance with a dramatic display of food and flowers!
A low, lush Thanksgiving centerpiece for the dining table or a tall, elegant Thanksgiving flower arrangement for the buffet will impress your friends and family and add welcoming warmth to your table.
If your table is too full of delectable platters of turkey and sweet potatoes, here are some great ways to add autumn accents without taking up too much space:
Easy Thanksgiving Centerpiece Ideas
- Layer autumn leaves down the center of your table to create a colorful and organic table runner.
- Hollow out mini gourds and pumpkins and use as bud vases for autumn-toned blossoms.
- Fill clear glass vases with water and add small berries like cranberries or holly berries and float single blossoms or floating candles.
- Accent platters and buffets with fruits that highlight the colors of the season and celebrate the bounty of the harvest– vibrant clementines, petite lady apples, clusters of grapes
- Place dried Indian Corn at each place setting and at strategic points along the table.
