As I look around Big Apple Florist, I am struck today by the incredible warm tones of the cherry brandy roses featured in our autumn floral arrangements. NYC winter air is creeping in and the colors of purple brassica, mango calla, and lively orange pincushion protea fill my work space.
If you’re looking for the perfect flower arrangements for fall, we carry cherry brandy roses throughout the year as well as other autumn-adorning colors and species. Today particularly, I am struck by the rich golden colors expanding to rosy, peachy red outer petals like a setting autumn sun. Absolutely glorious.

September 20th, 2012 by Georgeann That day has come for the Jewish community to celebrate its most important day of the year, Yom Kippur. This holy day is meant for purifying the soul and cleansing all your sins before God by fasting for 26 hours. The celebration before and after Yom Kippur are festive meals that ignite the abundant New Year and bless our children. Although this holiday is very serious and comes with much thought and prayer, it has an underlying meaning to symbolize the joy of the New Year and the confidence that God will forgive our sins.

I live in a very Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn, NYC. I went on a run last night and happened to notice many Jewish families walking hand in hand, groups were singing Jewish hymns while others were laughing and chasing after each other. Regardless of our cultural differences, we all share common threads:
- Embracing our family’s traditions
- Celebrating our past, present, and futures [Read more →]

About the Rosh Hashanah Holiday Upon Us:
“Leshanah tovah tikateiv veteichateim.”
Translated, “May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year.” What a great mantra to tell yourself at the beginning of the year. That New Year, for the Jewish community, begins on the first and second days of Tishrei, called Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah is a beautiful holiday set out to celebrate the creation of Adam and Eve, the birth of mankind, and the special relationship between God and humanity.

Did you ever notice how the best shower you ever have is the shower after a long day on the beach. You come out and put on your lightest most comfortable clothes, and splash on the most refreshing eau de cologne. I always feel compelled to put on some make-up and wear lots of groovy silver jewelry – something about a day at the beach makes me want to be extra sparkly. The question is – “how can I maintain this sort of enthusiasm on Wednesday when I am trapped at my desk?” The answer: “Colors.” [Read more →]

Every autumn, my husband notes that the fastest time of year is the time between Labor Day and Halloween. One day you are sitting in your shorts eating barbequed chicken, and the next school is starting, the nights grow colder, the heat goes on in the building, Christmas decorations go up next to the Halloween candy at the store, and you still haven’t taken your winter clothes down from storage!
To help slow down time and focus on the beautiful but fleeting autumn season, I thought I’d talk about our favorite blossom for fall floral arrangements: the chrysanthemum! [Read more →]
October 27th, 2011 by Georgeann Halloween is a holiday that gives you permission to let your inner child run wild, whether it means dressing up like a zombie prom-queen or buying giant bags of candy “for the kids.” As adults, we really shouldn’t go door to door begging for candy, but we can treat ourselves to a different treat: gorgeous, ghoulish Halloween flower arrangements!
Frightful Halloween Centerpiece Ideas
Our “Midnight Glow” Halloween flower arrangement creates the look of a haunted forest. It features bright mango callas and deep aubergine, practically black “Schwarzwalder” callas combined with black scabiosas, brown, snake-like fiddleheads (also known as monkey tails – to me, a much more disturbing name), and twigs.

September 28th, 2011 by Georgeann Rosh Hashanah: A Holiday of Hope and Abundance
Rosh Hashanah is one of the high holy days in the Jewish faith that is filled with hope. While Rosh Hashanah is a joyful celebration, it is also a deeply spiritual holiday filled with ritual and meaning. It marks the beginning of the “10 Days of Awe” where people reflect on their actions of the past year and seek forgiveness, culminating in “The Day of Atonement,” Yom Kippur.
The Rosh Hashanah festivities are usually accented in a few different ways:
- Symbolic foods that ask for sweetness in the year to come, like dipping apples into honey and eating challah bread made with honey and raisins.
- Eating “new” fruit (fruit just coming into season) such as the pomegranate, which reminds us to appreciate life and the abundance of the earth.
