September 28th, 2011 by Georgeann Rosh Hashanah: A Holiday of Hope and Abundance
Rosh Hashanah is one of the high holy days in the Jewish faith that is filled with hope. While Rosh Hashanah is a joyful celebration, it is also a deeply spiritual holiday filled with ritual and meaning. It marks the beginning of the “10 Days of Awe” where people reflect on their actions of the past year and seek forgiveness, culminating in “The Day of Atonement,” Yom Kippur.
The Rosh Hashanah festivities are usually accented in a few different ways:
- Symbolic foods that ask for sweetness in the year to come, like dipping apples into honey and eating challah bread made with honey and raisins.
- Eating “new” fruit (fruit just coming into season) such as the pomegranate, which reminds us to appreciate life and the abundance of the earth.
The Perfect Rosh Hashanah Table Decorations and Flowers
Another great way to highlight this special holiday of hope and sweet abundance? With a generous gift of Rosh Hashanah flowers!

September 22nd, 2011 by Georgeann My friend Lisa is an amazingly creative and fun human being. As an actress, she spent the summer in the Finger Lakes singing and dancing as Sally Bowles in “Cabaret.” I know she is an accomplished painter, and also has been a professional muralist; s
he dresses cool and knows all about make-up; and she smiles 96% of the time. What I DIDN’T know is that Lisa has an almost supernaturally green thumb.
Last time I visited Lisa was something like 8 years ago, and my memory was of a sparse and open space. Imagine my pleasant surprise on a recent visit when I walked into a plant-filled urban gardening oasis in NYC! Beautifully displayed green, glossy plants did wonders to make the apartment feel cozy, cool and inviting. I got her to share some of her plant care advice with me:
Choose Gorgeous, Low-Maintenance Indoor Plants
Zamioculcas zamifoia: Lisa’s beautiful “ZZ plant” is a good choice, because these plants are good-looking, have a unique shape, and are very easy to maintain. Plant care is a cinch: they don’t require much water and are broad-spectrum plants that can tolerate direct sun or shade.

September 21st, 2011 by Ashley Because the Big Apple Florist design studio is located a few blocks from the United Nations on 45th Street, every year during the third week of September we find ourselves smack dab in the middle of the hubbub that accompanies the arrival
of world leaders and their delegations. Over the next few weeks in September, we are usually busy assisting the Missions and Embassies with event flowers, welcoming gifts, and floral décor for special events in addition to our everyday NYC flower deliveries.
Creating Event Flowers for NYC’s United Nations Summits
On Monday we got an exciting opportunity to provide floral décor for a special UN Summit Side Event sponsored by the United Republic of Tanzania and held at NYU’s College for Dentistry [Read more →]
September 17th, 2011 by Georgeann Last week, Big Apple Florist got an amazing opportunity to decorate the NYC set of Anderson Cooper’s brand-new daytime talk show Anderson!
Our flowers can be seen next week in the Monday, September, 19 2011 episode. Anderson’s special guest on Monday will be his fabulous Mom, Gloria Vanderbilt, and will feature a musical performance by Judy Collins – Gloria’s favorite singer! The producers asked that we create a colorful display garden of folk-singing flowers, with our inspiration being Judy Collin’s “Wildflowers” Album.

Why on earth am I singing songs from “White Christmas” in early September? Because I’m a florist, that’s why! Oddly enough, here at Big Apple we began preparing for the holidays in July, like industrious little squirrels. We spent the summer shopping for gorgeous wreaths, trees, ornaments and bows to add festive sparkle to homes and offices when we offer holiday decorating services come Christmastime.

September 14th, 2011 by Georgeann Perfect for Floral Table Centerpieces with Big, Bright, Fluffy Balls of Glorious Color!
Perfect alone or in mixed bouquets, the versatile hydrangea is a favorite flower for floral table centerpieces with the designers here at Big Apple Florist. The name translates to ‘hydro’ (water) and ‘angeion’ (tub or jug) because the 1739 Dutch botanist Gronovius felt the rounded flower resembled an ancient water vessel.
Hydrangeas have the unique property of changing color as they age. They start off in various shades of green, and by the time color changing is complete they are an autumnal shade of red. From December to May, colorful selections are increasingly available in New York. [Read more →]

Flowers have the unique capacity to pay tribute to both life and death. Just as they can signify the start of spring and new life, they are also used to honor our loved ones in death.
Flowers are an important part of American culture and funeral tradition as an expression of sympathy, and providing beautiful, delicate flower arrangements is an important funeral florist NYC service that we at Big Apple Florist provide.
Choosing the Right Funeral Flower Arrangement
Over the years providing funeral florist NYC services, I have noticed a trend away from traditional, large sympathy designs such as sprays and fan-shaped baskets. Today’s funeral flower arrangements are more understated and personal, meant to decorate the room in an elegant manner. [Read more →]
