Birch Bark & Trees for Floral Design Arrangements

At Big Apple, we strongly believe in matching the floral décor to the according season.  With winter wrapping up, we wanted to remind you of an innovative floral concept that is perfectly appropriate for wintertime: Birch.  Whether it’s an actual birch tree, or birch bark, birch is a fresh new element for floral design arrangements.  Birch is emblematic and indicative of wintertime and is a stylish new trend in contemporary floral design.  Birch trees and birch bark are a great way to make a winter event special and unique.  Using birch as part of your floral décor for your occasion is a great way to change the mood and overall look of a space.

Birch Trees & Birch Bark for Weddings

For your chupah, try using birch trees as the backbone that can have other floral elements wrapped around it to create a varied effect.  Birch trees as centerpieces, or as elements of centerpieces, have been a floral design trend for a long time now.  While this concept may not be ‘new’ it is still relevant and will help you achieve a wintertime ambiance.

Birch Bark Vases, Wallpaper, & Arrangements

Additionally, using birch bark to wrap around vases, to cover tables, or even to cover entire walls for a birch bark wallpaper effect, can add a new element that might surprise your guests.  The birch bark creates another dimension and adds texture in a simple and effective way.

For smaller floral design arrangements, inserting birch branches, birch twigs, and smaller pieces of birch bark, can help create the same effect on a lesser scale.

Pink Flowers & Bouquets

Pink Flowers

hot-pink-wedding-bouquets

Pink flowers are a romantic and amiable choice as winter thaws and spring romance fills the air.  The color pink symbolizes gentleness and admiration and is often associated with femininity and fertility.  From the palest and most subtle pink to fiery hot pinks, pink flowers can convey a range of feelings and sentiment.  Pink floral arrangements are a stylish choice for the everyday, or for that special occasion.  There are a multitude of flowers available in pink.  Some of our favorites are unique and distinct pink flowers that commingle a variety of shades and tonal ranges.

Pink Hydrangea’s are a tricky flower to grow and conditions must be perfect for them to change and maintain their pink coloration.  For this reason, they can have an array of variance even within a single petal creating texture and character.   Expressing love, gratitude and enlightenment, these pink flowers, with their globe shape, are worldly and sensual.

pink-floral-arrangementsPink Anemone’s are robust and animated and can bring a lighthearted spirit to any environment.  Often referred to as the wind flower, because it is believed that the wind blowing against the petals is what causes it to bloom, the often contrasting and colorful dark centers makes a bold statement .  Pink flowers and bouquets of anemones make an eye-catching statement.

Pink Roses are some of the oldest roses in existence and appear often in early works of art.  Their assorted gradations cover a breadth of values from the palest of pinks such as peachy and coral pink, to mid-tones like mauve and true pinks, to the deepest pinks that range from magenta red to violet blue.  Lighter colored pink roses signify gentleness and admiration while the dark pink roses denote gratitude and appreciation.

Pink Lilies bring harmony and joy to any surrounding and symbolize wealth and prosperity.  Their sweet and subtle fragrance can stimulate the senses.  Both bold and graceful at the same time, they can bring peace and tranquility and make a statement all at once.
Pink Dahlia come in a wide range of shapes and sizes with many bloom varieties, each one more impressive then the next.  Petals can be wispy, pointed, round, or tubular, making flowers that can be used to create decorative pink floral arrangements.  With a wide diversity of meaning they are a flower to use when you want to take a walk on the wild side.

Pink Fresia’s are highly perfumed funnel or goblet shaped flowers.  Most often symbolic of innocence, these wiry stemmed and delicate blooms, create flower arrangements that dance.  These magnificent flowers make great accent flowers and exude sweetness and certainty.

Pink Floral Arrangements

Any pink floral arrangement can be an embodiment of grace and elegance.  Pair up pale pink roses with yellow roses to express admiration and happiness.  Create stark contrast by partnering hot pink tulips with deep green cabbage ribbons.  You can create pink floral arrangements that are subtle and gentle with subdued variations of lurid pink, or add spice and flavor to your setting with sultry deep hues that are flirty and sensuous.

Pink Wedding Bouquets

Like pink floral arrangements, pink wedding floral bouquets can delight the hearts of those we love on that special day.  For a more traditional wedding, add a touch of color with a white and peachy pink wedding bouquet of roses.  This elegant mix breathes new life into old customs.  Blend reds with pinks for sultry and captivating arrangement that will impress and enchant.  Pink wedding bouquets mingled with either refined or adventurous colors can add youth, innocence and joy to any event.

Pink Flowers & Bouquets Anytime and Anywhere

Pink surrounds us in our everyday lives and expresses the variety of meaning that the color can encompass.   From the famous pink campaign for intimate apparel, ribbons to raise awareness for breast cancer, a rock ’n roll singer stylized in the color, a magazine for career women, pinking shears being named after pink flowers, and so many more, the color pink can indulge emotions, from the gentle to the sassy.  Always contemporary and extraordinary, pink flower arrangements and pink wedding bouquets enhance any occasion or space they fill.  Tickle me pink!

bridgewaters-south-street-seaport-wedding1We are happy to report that the Kim Candullo Bridgewater’s wedding was a complete floral success.  We [the bride and groom] have not stopped talking about how many of our guests kept commenting on the extraordinary flower arrangements. From the creation of wedding floral bouquets, floral table centerpieces and a custom alter, to the fine job your crew of 5 workers did setting up the day of our wedding, we were truly blessed with the “best New York City florist shop” says groom Michael Candullo.

candullo-wedding-bridgewaters-nycGuests were ushered into the ceremony area at Bridgewater’s NYC which was transformed from a large industrial open space to a very warm and beautiful ceremony room.  The standard wood wall panels provided by facilities were decorated with sheer white fabrics.  A truly stunning alter of flowers was built in the front of the room with white orchids draping down from the custom 3 pillar structure that Abu, our Creative Director and his crew designed and built.

The Bridgewater’s NYC cocktail room was made more festive with Abu’s suggestion of Palm Trees that were placed in each corner of the room.  Smaller wedding floral table centerpieces were created especially for cocktail hour.  They were a subtle way to add a personal touch to this room.

1)    How did you become a professional floral designer?

Originally I was hired at Big Apple Florist to, help coordinate special events, meet with our clients, AND as a floral designer to pull each event together. After a few months, the professional floral designer I worked directly with married and moved out-of-state, so I took more of a hands-on role when it came to the design aspect, in addition to handling the logistics of each event. So although I wasn’t hired as a floral designer, with many months of observing and practicing, I learned to be a REAL floral designer!

No matter what types of friends you have today, these relationships are relationships that are formed in trust and loyalty and can become bonds that are impossible to break.  National Friendship Month is the ideal time to tell your present day friends that you are there for them because they have been there for you.

History of Valentine’s Day Flowers, Love Letters & Cupid

Some of us may not know that the tradition of Valentine ’s Day flowers and love letters actually has a profound history.  Valentine was a priest from Rome who secretly performed marriages during a time when Claudius II actually outlawed this practice, seeing it as a distraction for young men serving in the military.  When this was discovered, Valentine was put in prison, during which time legend has it, he fell in love with the jailor’s daughter.  He wrote her a letter that ended with “From your Valentine” to his love before being beheaded on February 14.  Later this day was declared St. Valentine’s Day.  Another legend tells of her son, Cupid, the Roman god of love.
